Today’s Main Report

Why Shaq is everyone’s favorite Celebrity DJ

DJ Diesel or Shaq as he is more commonly known hyping the crowd up at Lollapalooza 2023

Celebrities have long been multi-dimensional in the ways they provide entertainment. Rappers try to act. Comedians try to rap, actors try to sing and everyone else tries to DJ. The list of celebrities who say they dabble in the art of spinning decks goes on and on from Paris Hilton to Idris Elba to Frodo himself Elijah Wood. Now there isn’t anything inherently wrong with Celebs Djing. Djing is a fun, growing hobby, that a ton of people partake in and famous people need hobbies too besides making us poor people feel bad.

The issue inherently rises when these Celebrity DJ enthusiasts supposedly start taking their hobby and competing with the "professionals” of the world. Of those multitudes of people who DJ as a hobby, few actually get to perform in professional settings and even fewer are able to actually make a full-time decent career off of it. Celebrities however are able to use their star power and almost immediately be amongst powerhouse DJs in booking possibilities once they decide to enter the ring. From a promotional standpoint, it does make sense for venues and festivals to want to book these celebs, with already strong fan bases who probably would want to come out to see them perform live. Others say that these A-Listers are abusing their star power to get another cash grab and taking away from “actual” DJs who actively are honing the craft of mixing.

There is some inherent truth in that statement. Venues, festivals, and clubs are limited on the number of spots they have to book events, and anytime they book a so-called “celebrity dj” that’s one spot being taken away from a DJ who's been grinding in their bedroom for years looking to get a break. Some of these Celebs do end up getting some insane gigs that full-time DJs could only dream of. Idris Elba for example recently came off a stint of playing Coachella this year. Paris Hilton who has played a few festivals in her residency has also had a few petitions to keep her off lineups as many say her skills are subpar to others who could play the same slot.

Okay but where does our guy DJ Diesel aka Shaquille O’Neal fall in all this? If you don’t know Shaq is a world-renowned retired Basketball player, Sports Analyst, and exploding Celebrity DJ. His popularity as a DJ seems to be at a peak right now after headlining two festivals this past weekend. Relative to other Celeb DJs Shaq has been honing his craft in music since 1993, which is probably longer than some other artists might even be alive. Shaq has also been very vocal about his love for DJing and music for a very long time. The true icing that sets Shaq apart from others and really gets him an in with other Artists is that he actively vouches to use his platform as someone with a massive audience to support other musicians in the industry and those trying to come into it. Shaq has been known and willing to play mixes/cuts or songs from smaller artists and even encourages it by promoting his email for artists to send those tracks to.

Shaq knows exactly how he is positioned in the music industry and leans into it in the best way possible. He knows technically he’s not gonna out mix those who’ve been turning the tables as a means of survival but he can use his reach and stardom to bring artists together get them exposure and bring the electronic scene as a whole more into the forefront. He’s seen as a generally approachable person in the industry which just seems to resonate well with other artists, along with just throwing down heavy each time he plays. Cementing him as one of the more if not most likeable Celebrity DJ out there right now.

That’s all for today!
