Newjeans is having one of the most historic weeks in music!

Newjeans performing live at Lollapalooza 2023

Okay look I promise this is not a Newjeans fan blog but this is all got for now, writing this at 4:50 am at an airport in Chicago.

Newjeans this week not only performed their first performance stateside it was also the first time Lolla had a female Korean pop group perform mainstage at all! Making the quintet a historic act for the Chicago-based music festival. Not only that but it was believed to be one of the most packed non-headling acts ever as the T-Mobile Stage was packed from the front to the back with fans representing themselves as “bunnies”. Daily attendance for Lolla is capped at around 150k humans. So it may be safe to say with Thursday being sold out that a good majority of that capacity was embracing Newjeans during their time on stage.

On top of killing the stage in Chicago, the group was also killing the charts by landing their first Number 1 spot on the billboard top 200 with their album “Get Up”. The number 1 also makes them only the second all-female Kpop group to do so as well behind Blackpink. Actually, they are the only all-female group period to do this in the last 15 years!

If you didn’t know the Billboard top 200 tracks album sales with a certain amount of digital streams now counting towards a single album purchase. Ironically enough most of the sales here actually came from physical purchases of the CD version of the album. Most likely due to the genius marketing that is done here incorporating goodies and fan rewards for physical copies of the album, on top of incorporating different versions of the album for each member with different goods. Enticing fans to buy multiple copies of the album.

Another factor that helped on the streaming side here is the album technically being an EP. An “EP” or extended play is usually considered shorter than an album ranging from 1-6 songs. An album by the standards of the Billboard Top 200 is just considered any grouping of songs released together which is what an EP is in this case, just fewer songs. This helps gives advantages in streaming by allowing streamers to stream the songs a lot more.
